Comenius Bilateral School Partnership
Student Exchange Promoting Intercultural Dialogue
Coming together through communication, using sport and language learning.
The focus of this partnership is a bilateral student exchange between Realschule Hilpoltstein in Bavaria (Germany) and our school here in County Louth, Ireland: Scoil Uí Mhuirí.
The overriding aim of our exchange is the development of intercultural competence and the beginning of intercultural dialogue. This has been initiated and reached mainly through sport. The students from both countries teach the guest students the traditional games of their respective countries(Gaelic football and handball in the first year, hurling/camogie and Völkerball in the second year) There is of course some attendance at the guest school's classes, whereby those with mother tongue competence participate and demonstrate language use.
Regarding the sport's part of the project, the learning and playing of the games is filmed and burned onto a DVD. An accompanying brochure with the most important rules and supplementary exercises is also being developed. The DVD and brochures will be disseminated to relevant, interested institutions and other persons, such as PE teachers, schools, clubs and community groups. The new sports will be offered to other pupils in the respective schools within a festival framework.
