Transition Year

Transition Year is a unique one year programme for students who have completed the Junior Certificate. It provides a bridge to enable them to make the transition from the more dependent type of learning associated with the Junior Certificate to the more independent learning environment associated with the Senior cycle. It encourages personal and social development and recognises the need for students to grow in independence. Transition Year fosters academic achievement as students prepare for a Leaving Certificate programme, further study and adult and working life. It encourages the development of a wide range of transferable critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills.

2009/2010
TY students benefit from participation in a range of projects and activities and take part in many sports and leisure activities. The highlight of the academic year 2009/10 was the production of Scrooge. As you can see from the photos above, it was a very professional and fun project!

The Transition Year Class of 2009/10 performed a fine production of Scrooge, the musical in December 2009 at Scoil Uí Mhuirí. All of the class were involved with lots of jobs for everyone: scenery, costumes, music, acting, singing, designing posters and tickets, promoting the event etc.

The students had a great time, with many taking to the stage for the first time. Ms. Kirk (Director) and Ms. Shields (Musical Director) were very pleased with the students' performances and were delighted to receive such support from student choir members, back stage crew, make up artists, colleagues and of course George. 2008/2009
TY students enjoy participating in many projects in a wide variety of subject areas. During the academic year 2008/9 the transition year students took part in the 2nd year of a Comenius Bilateral project. The students travelled to Germany in November 2008 and received a return visit from the Hilpolstein students in April 2009.

Part of the TY students' language class activities was the preparation and presentation of a Europe in Focus project. The students' powerpoint presentations were used as a teaching tool to enhance 2nd year students' awareness of Europe.

The TY students also met Mairead Mc Guinness MEP in 2009 during their visit to Oldbridge and the Battle of the Boyne site, where a battle involving soldiers from many European Countries took place in 1690. The students, accompaied by their German exchange partners enjoyed engaging in conversation about the work of an MEP, and afterwards learned about the history of the Battle of the Boyne at this OPW site.
